I simply cannot believe it's been five years since I opened the scented doors to the Little Perfume House that Could! These last five years have been amazing. I've met some of the best, most beautiful and genuine people through Conjure. I've learned so much about what it means to run my own business and what it means to grow as an artist, a perfumier and as an individual as well. There is no way I would be here if it weren't for trusting the mad idea that my idea was worth investing in and that I could count on myself to see my dream to fruition. I'm grateful I took the chance. Which reminds me of my favorite quote I first read in Julia Cameron's book The Artists' Way "Leap and the net will appear."

I feel so incredibly blessed to do what I love as my job and to work for myself is a true miracle. After all, I do come with a warning label: "does not work well with others" :D

The number five is sacred to the Orisha Oshun. Many consider Oshun to be flirtatious, a femme fatale and sometimes conversely, sweetly demure. In my experience, Oshun is a fierce warrior. While she does have elements to her personality that are coquettish, Oshun, the youngest of all Orishas, is arguably the most powerful. When Olodumare created the world, s/he could tell it was still incomplete. Looking down upon the newly created world God saw the sheer raw and vast beauty of his/her creation and tears of joy and ecstasy rolled down his/her cheeks cascading on to the world below. Born in those tears was Oshun. She adds to life all that makes it worth living: sensuality, pleasure, beauty, community, friends, and of course, love.

Some thoughts for my darling daughter on the evening of your second birthday as you sleep soundly in bed, exhausted from the joy of your special day:

Two years ago you entered my life and launched me head long into the most glorious, confounding, mysterious, challenging, profound and ecstatic journey imaginable. There is simply no way I could have ever anticipated exactly how far my body, my mind, my heart and my soul could be expanded, stretched and pushed to the limits by your mere existence. Your steadfast presence has acted as a mirror pool for me; a relentless reflection of revolving angels and demons merging and dissolving, transforming as the ripples radiate out then collapse back in on themselves.  While I may look at my reflection and be horrified, impressed or despondent, you see only me and truly love what is there without fear or judgment.

I thank you for all that you've offered me, oftentimes despite myself: opportunities to grow and evolve. For simple moments in time; games of Peek-A-Boo and the healing metaphor borne of those moments, the tender respite I took in hiding sad and heavy eyes behind my hands while I picked up the shards of a heart that had imploded by surrendering to the gravity of love. Thank you for the comfort and reassurance that your spontaneous peals of joyous laughter provided while I searched for buoyancy in the darkness, for meaning and purpose that I knew was hidden within the riddle of your tiny smile; for the me that exists as a whole reflection in your eyes. But mostly, thank you for having the courage to be here in this incarnation and choosing me to be your mama. Let's grow together, dear one.

Tarot Customs, Contests and Four Thieves!

For the last several lunations, I have been secretly working on multiple deeply magickal projects. Most are still "cooking" but some are ready for preview! It is with great excitement that I present, for your consideration, the following work:

A BOTTLE OF TAROT

Essentially, it's a reading in a bottle. By focusing on one of the following aspects of interest: Creativity, Love, Prosperity or Spirituality, I will do a tarot spread that enables me to communicate with both my and your ancestral spirits who will reveal blockages and the means of their alleviation, illuminate opportunities for growth, anticipate potential pitfalls, explore future possibilities and outcomes.

I will email you the details of your reading with a photo of the reading attached to it. Now for the truly inspired part: I will then create a 10ml apothecary bottle of magickal perfume using an interpretation of the cards in the reading. By utilizing the concepts of aromatherapy, magickal herbalism (Western as well as Hoodoo) and planetary as well as elemental associations a one of a kind potion will be formulated help overcome the energetic blockages, enhance areas of growth and to attract fortuitous future outcomes that are specific to you. The perfume will be lovingly hand crafted in a ritual environment and empowered with prayer and reiki.

Because of the complex nature of the project and my almost compulsive dedication to crafting an absolutely wonderful product,  I can only offer 10 readings over the next three months. This would normally be $200 ($150 for a custom and $50 for the reading) but since this is the first time I'm offering this type of endeavor, It will be $150, postage paid (and I'll also include a little 4ml body spray/hair gloss of your fragrance as well, just 'cause)

FOUR THIEVES

During the dark times of the Black Death, a group of four ne'er do wells were captured whilst looting bodies that had succumbed to the plague. Curious about their ability to avoid illness while knee deep in crime and disease, the arresting officers granted the Thieves leniency in exchange for the formula behind their success and thus the Legend of the Four Thieves was born.

There are other stories you can research that are more than likely the linguistic origin of Four Thieves, but they don't have the same drama and flair, so we won't share them here. Suffice to say, the Four Thieves formula has been around for centuries used as an anti microbial formulation fending off pestilence long before the science existed that backed it up. Once every four years, a spectacular day is sandwiched snugly in between February 28th and March 1st. Most commonly known as Leap Year, February 29th allows for the alignment of human time with the chaos of the cosmos. More specifically, it was created in the Gregorian calendar to ensure that the Vernal Equinox is as close to March 21 as possible. This assures that the Christian holiday of Easter will fall on the full moon on or after the first day of spring. This is where the curious comes in - because that arrangement seems splendidly pagan if you ask me!

So, join me in celebrating the human desire to create order out of chaos and ride the wild waves of the cosmos - all so we can celebrate rebirth and resurrection by basking in the light of the full moon.
